Crowns and Fixed Dentures
Crowns and fixed prostheses, such as bridges, are dental restorations that completely cover the affected tooth and are permanently cemented to it. This treatment not only provides greater strength to damaged teeth but also improves their appearance, taking into account factors such as the color, shape, and function of the natural tooth.
When it is not possible to use a natural tooth as a foundation for these restorations, single-tooth dental implants and dental crowns are used. Crowns screwed onto the implants perfectly mimic the characteristics of natural teeth and function optimally.
There are various materials used to make dental crowns. Temporary crowns are generally made of acrylic or PMMA, while permanent crowns are made of ceramic; some well-known types include zirconia and lithium disilicate, which provide a more natural-looking result and greater strength.
Procedure for Placing a Dental Crown
The procedure for placing a dental crown is generally carried out in two phases. During the first visit, the affected tooth is numbed to ensure greater comfort during the procedure. At this stage, the damaged portion of the tooth is removed, and if necessary, the removed area is restored. An impression is then taken using an intraoral scanner, and this impression will be used by a specialized laboratory to create a custom restoration.
During the fabrication process for the new crown, a temporary restoration will be placed to cover the treated tooth, allowing it to maintain its normal function and a natural, aesthetic appearance.
Within the next (1–2) days, you’ll need to return for a follow-up appointment, during which the permanent crown will be fitted and cemented in place. During this procedure, the dentist will make any necessary adjustments to ensure that the crown fits comfortably in your mouth.
At the end of treatment, we will provide recommendations for oral hygiene and maintenance to ensure the longevity and optimal function of your restoration. It is important to remember that, while all treatments achieve excellent aesthetic and functional results, they do not restore your teeth to their natural state at birth, and issues may eventually arise, requiring replacements.
