Dental veneers are thin layers of porcelain or resin, just a few millimeters thick, which is why they are also known as “contact lenses.” They are bonded to the teeth using special dental cement designed for this procedure, preserving the teeth’s structure and function. They can be made of ceramic or composite resin, with the former being more durable and retaining their color better over the long term. A minimally invasive procedure
There are many fears and misconceptions surrounding tooth reduction; however, thanks to advances in the materials used, it is not always necessary to reduce the teeth for the placement of dental veneers, and conservative reductions limited to the enamel can be performed. Nevertheless, this varies depending on the positioning of the teeth and whether there is sufficient space for the placement of the veneers; which is why it’s important to remember that in many cases where there is a very pronounced alteration in tooth position (crowding and diastemas), orthodontic treatment will be the most recommended option.
Step-by-Step Guide to Dental Veneer Placement at the
Diagnostic Consultation
A comprehensive clinical evaluation is performed, consisting of a photographic protocol, a panoramic X-ray, and an intraoral digital scan. It is very important at this stage to discuss the patient’s expectations regarding the before-and-after results and to understand the functional and aesthetic scope of the case.
Digital Smile Design
At Belinno, we use one of the best planning software programs recognized worldwide. Smilecloud is a digital simulation tool with an extensive library of tooth shapes that allows us to plan the case. Based on this digital study, a 3D model is created and then printed for use in future testing.
Mock-up (smile test)
This is a simulation of the final result, using temporary materials designed to allow for a trial fitting in the patient’s mouth—without any dental intervention—so that the patient and, if necessary, their companions can visualize and approve the design before proceeding to the final stages.
Dental Preparation
Although the procedure is minimally invasive, it may be necessary to slightly grind down the outer surface of the teeth to eliminate any retention. A digital and/or conventional impression is then taken to fabricate the veneers.
Bonding/Cementing of Veneers
Following a rigorous protocol, certain specific treatments must be performed on the ceramic materials and on the teeth to improve adhesion and enable the use of the adhesives and cements recommended for this type of procedure.
Protective plate
A final impression is taken to create a protective mouthguard, which should be worn every night.
Control Recommendations
The success of dental treatments also depends on the patient's behavior; for this reason, it is important to follow a few recommendations:
Wear a nighttime protective splint, which is always provided as part of the treatment.
Avoid biting with your front teeth, especially when eating hard foods, and preferably cut all food with a fork and knife.
Brush your teeth with soft-bristled toothbrushes and floss at least twice a day, and avoid using any abrasive toothpastes that could damage the ceramic.
Veneers function just like normal teeth and can break if you engage in excessive behaviors, such as biting your nails, chewing on pencils or other objects, or tearing open packages, etc.
